A Weekend Boost in Voting Has A West Side School Hoping To Finish Strong

Students, teachers, parents and friends of Seaside Park Elementary are doing all they can to ensure the school wins the Aviva Community Fund so they can put $50,000 towards a new playground.

Over the weekend, the school moved in to first place in their category thanks to 25,000 votes.

Charlene Thompson is part of the fundraising committee and she tells us the old schools were without a playground for some time.

She says the playground at Havelock was removed when construction began so the kids from Havelock and St. Pat’s didn’t have a playground for up to two years.

Thompson says they have a quote from an Ontario company that would put the cost of the playground at $250,000 with $81,000 raised so far.

She tells us winning could mean they may be able to implement a phase 1 structure before June of next year.

You can vote for all the Saint John area projects in the Aviva Community Fund contest until Thursday.

The other projects are the Saint John Field House project, the Lunch and Supper program at KV Oasis Youth Centre and another playground project at Westfield Elementary.
