Common Council Hopes To Have Pedway Escalators Fixed By Next Week

Common Council is hoping the escalators in Market Square will be back up and running within the next week.

Pedestrians have recently been able to use the escalators as stairs, but when work is being done the only other option is a small elevator meant for the disabled.

A petition was brought forward to council and Mayor Don Darling acknowledged the public’s frustration.

Darling calls it “unacceptable” and says they need to get the 35 year old escalators moving again soon.

The city’s energy manager Samir Yammine hopes to have the repairs made by Friday with tests on the reparis being done Monday or Tuesday.

Councillor Ray Strowbridge voiced his frustration around the escalators and says the repairs needs to be done before the East Coast Music Awards next month.

Councillor Donna Reardon is not a fan of escalators.

Reardon says $30,000 a year is a lot to pay for maintenance and calls stairs the way to go.
