With a provincial election just on the horizon the Gallant government has laid out its plans for the final legislative session of their mandate.
Lieutenent governor Jocelyne-Roy Vienneau delivered the speech from the throne which states the government will introduce legislation ahead of the federal legalization of recreational marijuana.
“This legislation will first ensure that public safety is respected by having strong regulations for production, distribution, and sale of cannabis coupled with the necessary awareness programs and enforcement,” the speech says.
The Gallant government also says during this session they’ll establish a carbon price that minimizes the effect on consumers and calls on big industry to, in their words, reduce emissions or pay their fair share. They also say they will introduce legislation on climate change.
“Unlike some who want to avoid the climate change challenge, your government believes that this is an opportunity to leverage new investments in new technologies to create sustainable economic growth for our province,” it reads.
They also touched on Worksafe NB:
“Over the past several years, rates were allowed to dip too low, which created the current situation where massive rate shock is required to make the fund sustainable. As a result, both workers and employers are dissatisfied.”
The government says it has established a task force to look into the situation and make recommendations.
