Firefighters Battle Fire At Apartment Building On Duke Street

Thick smoke could be seen pouring from the windows and roof of an apartment building on Duke Street in the early morning hours as firefighters worked to put out an intense and seemingly very stubborn fire.

Flames could also be seen shooting out of the roof at different points as fire crews attempted to subdue the blaze, which seems to have started around midnight and around 2 a.m. the work on the apartment building was still described as ‘defensive.’

The building looks like it has sustained some major damage, though we were told that everyone made it out of the two-story brick building at 75 and 77 Duke alright there were at least a couple of people on the scene wrapped in Canadian Red Cross blankets.

1700 Saint John Energy customers in the south end lost power because of the fire and the company tweeted at around 2 a.m. that power has been restored to all except 55 customers in the Duke Street area and that once fire crews have cleared the scene they’ll be able to provide an estimated restoration time.

The building is next to Jones Gallery + Studio:
