Changes Coming To Labour Legislation And Speed Limits In School Zones

The provincial government is changing the Motor Vehicle Act to set standardized speed limits in school zones at 30 kilometers an hour within municipalities and 50 kilometers an hour elsewhere unless otherwise posted.

Provincial Transportation Minister Bill Fraser says there could be variations. Factors to be considered would include traffic volume, road conditions, intersections and prevailing traffic speeds.

The provincial government has also introduced changes to the Industrial Relations Act to include first contract arbitration with the intention to make it easier for all concerned to reach a first time collective agreement. Similar legislation is in place in other provinces.

Labour Minister Gilles LePage points to studies that show first contract arbitration reduces work stoppages by at least 50 per cent.

The changes are being welcomed by the New Brunswick Federation of Labour.
