Candlelight Vigil Being Held For Dr. Cindy McCormick

The life of a Saint John woman described as funny, fearless and a firecracker will be celebrated this weekend with a candlelight vigil.

Dr. Cindy McCormick spent more than 15 years as a dentist in the city and was the director of Bayside Dental Clinic.

The 46-year-old woman was murdered last month in Lake Louise, Alberta, where she was attending a dental conference. The body of her partner, Saint John firefighter Bobby Kaine, was found across the border in British Columbia.

Erica Grutzner, a friend of Cindy’s, says at the vigil they will be acknowledging the way in which she died by having someone speak about domestic violence.

“The thought is, if it could happen to her, who else is hiding something? Who else has trouble in their relationship? Who else feels they can’t talk to a friend or doesn’t know where to go for help?” says Grutzner.

“We look at it as a way to share in this tragedy that there is help out there.”

The vigil is happening on Saturday at 6:30pm at Baxter’s Corner beach which is just off route 820 in Baxter’s Corner. There will be purple balloons marking the way from the airport the colour that represents domestic violence awareness and the vigil is open to the public.

“This is open to everyone and anyone, especially anyone who’s been affected by violence whether it be a friend, themselves, we encourage people to come in groups. It’s about celebrating friendship and it’s about celebrating the life that Cindy had and what life is meant to be.”
