Common Council voted in favour of going through a rezoning process to allow medical marijuana production facilities to be located in certain industrial zones in the city.
Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary says the city wants to be ready.
She says if somebody did wish to make an application to Saint John to have that type of business, the city could not accommodate them at this moment.
McAlary says the city has not received any applications for this type of business but says this rezoning process is being carried through with a “just in case” mindset.
Saint John is behind other cities in New Brunswick who have already selected certain industrial lands to be zoned for potential large-scale medical marijuana facilities.
The two facilities include Organigram in Moncton and Zenabis in Campbellton.
McAlary says the Planning Advisory Committee will select potential property sites where a medical marijuana facility could be located.
She hopes to have final approval in May.
