A Charlotte County Tour Will Attend The Vimy Ridge Centennial

A St. George teacher with a passion for history is leading a tour of Europe with 17 students and 5 adults called VIMY 2017: Beaches and Battlefields.

Anthony Carey says it was one of the more foundational events in our history either because it’s viewed by many as the birth of our nation or the historical question of what does it actually mean today.

Carey says when he was younger he was very interested in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and it’s success but more recently he had a German student give him a new perspective on it.

He says when we talk of Vimy Ridge being the birth of a nation, he hears a massacre of his people and Carey said this a real shock to his system making him re-evaluate how much glory and how much greatness you can attribute to a battle.

Carey says they will visit Amsterdam, Paris and London including the Vimy Ridge Centennial ceremony this weekend plus a visit to Normandy and the Juno Beach Centre.
