It’s Tick Season! Ensure Your Pet Is Protected

It’s tick season, but with that brings the concern of Lyme disease in our pets.

The Oaks Vet Clinic in Moncton is reporting its first confirmed case of Lyme disease contracted from an infected tick.

Dr. Ashley Farrell says they’ve noticed an increase in the number of ticks in Southeastern New Brunswick over the last few years, and that heightens the risk that they may be carrying the bacteria that causes lyme disease, “Lyme has been becoming a little bit more common around this area over the last couple of years. It is pretty common to see ticks at this time of year. It is certainly sothing that we are kepping an eye on, and the government is monitoring, and watching the number of cases. It is definitely something people should be aware of, to prevent exposure.”

It’s important that pets are protected. Dr. Farrell says, “Not all dogs that are bit by a tick do present with Lyme, but it is something pet owners should be aware of. ” There are vaccinations available and there are also flea and tick treatments for dogs and cats.

She says you should ask your veterinarian which is the best option for your pet.
