City’s Former Heritage Planner Says He Had Great Plans For Jelly Bean Buildings

The jelly bean buildings are no more having been torn down on Saturday.

A letter dated April 10th was also released on Saturday on behalf of the city’s former heritage planner containing an offer to buy the dilapidated buildings for a dollar each.

In the letter, Jim Bezanson says he was willing to rehabilitate the buildings, not just the facades, and have them designated under the Heritage Conservation By-Law.

Bezanson adds he also was willing to buy the unused plot of surplus land behind Police headquarters at Peel Plaza for a dollar.

He says his plan would have seen the development of a six storey tower behind the jellybean buildings with 20 per cent of the residences offered to artists rent free. Bezanson says this would be in line with a proposal of his in 2012 for an Artist in Residence program.

Bezanson complains the city has ignored any proposals he has made..
