An RCMP awareness campaign has been spreading across the country in recent days and has made its way to the Codiac detachment.
Members have been removing the yellow stripes from their uniform pants in a silent protest over wages and working conditions.
Terry McKee, a former member of Codiac RCMP and media liason with the Mounted Police Professional Association of Canada, says the yellow stripes campaign goes far beyond wages.
“(This is) completely out of frustration that has been plaguing the RCMP front-line members for several years now. It primarily has to do with health and safety issues, understaffing, equipment upgrades, training, harrassment,” he notes.
McKee says a recent pay package announcement from the federal government seems to have tipped the scales of frustration and the yellow stripes campaign was started by members in British Columbia.
McKee emphasizes this protest has nothing to do with the quality of service that members are providing to the public.
RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson says while he does not condone the action, no member of the force will be disciplined for taking part.
Some members of parliament have also expressed their support for the campaign by wearing pieces of yellow stripes to form a ribbon on their lapels.
