What started as a plea on Facebook, looking for ways to rescue a cat that was stuck under the bridge in St. Louis de Kent, that was about 60 feet from the ground ended with a very happy ending last night, thanks to a community effort.
Nicole Thebeau of the Kent County Animal Rescue was contacted a few days ago, after some kids spotted the cat under the bridge, and she immediately took action. She began putting the word out, looking for anyone who could help.
After word spread, she discovered the the cat belonged to a family in the area, and it had gone missing, “The cat belonged to a boy who is very sick. He has a very bad immune disorder and that is his best friend.”
They made several attempts, and set up live traps, and even draped a blanket over the edge, with the hopes the cat might climb up. They also had a ramp made. Thebeau says the local Fire Department came to the scene and attempted a rescue using a ladder. A firefighter was seriously hurt and had to be taken to hospital after the ladder suddenly collapsed.
The solution came last night, with a message to Fit Rocks Moncton, with the hopes they could offer their repelling skills to help.
Rehan Basson got the call. He latched onto a truck, and made his way down, “The cat looked very scared, the poor thing. I could see her looking down over the edge. I just started petting her for a bit, and she calmed down and I was able to get her into the bag.”
Basson says he doesn’t consider himself a hero..He was just happy he could use his climbing skills, to help the animal.
The cat is now home safe with her family.
