Man Accused In High Speed Chase Involving Stolen School Bus Unfit To Stand Trial

Matthew Duke has been deemed unfit to stand trial and has been remanded back to the Restigouche mental health facility.

The 20-year-old man is facing seven charges in connection with the theft of an empty school bus which rammed into two Saint John police cars during a high speed chase on Highways 1 and 7 on February 9.

One police cruiser was completely destroyed and an officer standing nearby had to run from the scene. The bus crashed in a gulley in Grand Bay-Westfield after all the tires were blown out using stop sticks.

Duke appeared in provincial court on Thursday afternoon in front of judge Andrew Palmer for a mental fitness hearing. His treating psychiatrist Dr. Alex Laevski of Campbellton told the court via videoconference that Duke is refusing medication and any psychiatric intervention.

Dr. Laevski also described him as currently not stable and it was his opinion that he was not fit to stand trial and two of his reports were entered as evidence.

Back in March, Duke was found mentally fit to stand trial but not criminally responsible. His case now has been referred to the Review Board.
