New Brunswick Beer Case To Be Heard By High Court

The Supreme Court has decided to wade into the debate over what free trade means within Canada. In this case, as it applies to alcohol.

The high court has decided to hear the appeal of a judge’s ruling in New Brunswick which struck down the provincial ban on bringing cheaper beer and liquor into the province.

It all began when Gerard Comeau was charged for bringing 14 cases of beer and three bottles of liquor he bought in Quebec over the provincial border into New Brunswick. The case went to court and the charges were overturned by Judge Ronald LeBlanc.

The New Brunswick Liquor Control Act prohibits anyone in the province from having more than 12 pints of beer not bought at a liquor store in the province.
