France Votes Today In Their Closely Watched Presidential Election

The eyes of the world are watching as voting is getting under way in the final round of France’s presidential race.

More than 1,000 French citizens were registered to vote here in the Maritimes, and many of them descended on Moncton yesterday to cast their vote in advance.

Consul-General of France Laurence Monmayrant says votes must be cast in person, and Moncton is the only place in the Maritimes where expats can vote.

The election is widely described as the most important vote in many years for France, and the European Union with implications for the entire Western political order.

Marine Le Pen believes in a more protectionist approach for France, and wants to close the borders, and possibly leave the European Union.

Meanwhile, her opponent Emmanuel Macron of En Marche! is seen as a supporter of globalism.

Polls close in France at 8 tonight.
