Two Foundations Receive Renewed Investments From Gallant Gov’t

Over $63-million in renewed funding has been announced for two New Brunswick foundations that support innovation and health research in the province.

The Innovation Foundation will be getting $11.4-million each year over four years while the Health Research Foundation will be receiving $4.5-million over that time period.

Premier Brian Gallant, who made the announcement at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick on the UNB Saint John campus, says that investments like these will help foster innovation.

“For us it’s a no brainer to be working with these partners,” says Gallant. “We believe that renewing these agreements with both foundations is not only going to help the New Brunswick economy but advance and innovate our education system and health care in New Brunswick.”

Dr. Tony Reiman is assistant dean of research at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick and is also a cancer researchers. Reiman says these two foundatinos provide a critical piece of research funding for the province.

“This funding puts highly skilled researchers to work, graduate students, technical staff and allows the researchers that are employed at places like Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick to build their research teams and execute their work,” says Dr. Reiman.

“Historically, New Brunswick has not ranked very highly across Canada in terms of provinces investing in research and the level of research activity and that’s been changing over the last number of years particiularly with the medical training programs, with the growth of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and the growth of the New Brunswick Helath Research Foundation.”
