Normal Spring Thawing Responsible For Minor Rock Collapse At Hopewell Rocks

Normal spring thawing conditions are responsible for a minor collapse at Hopewell Rocks.

Property Manager Noel Hamann says the rockfall was on the cliff face in the same cove where the iconic Elephant Rock collapsed last year.

He explains how this rockfall came about.

“As the snow thaws, it creates small rapids or water circulation going down, and often that will freeze during nights, and then as it thaws it creates some debris as it falls down,” says Hamann. “But this time of the year is particularly noted for that.”

Hamann says they typically don’t move things like rockfalls unless they are a health and safety issue to visitors.

He adds this fall will be cordoned off behind safety wires to protect the public and the employees.
