Greenpeace was critical of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission when presenting at a public hearing in Saint John on extending Point Lepreau’s license to operate.
ShawnPatrick Stensil says there is not enough information on emergency response outside of the facility and on NB Power’s plans for the long term management of radioactive waste.
CNSC commissioner asks why New Brunswick hasn’t updated its emergency response plans 6 years after Fukushima? Same in Ontario. #nbpoli

Stensil says the commission should also be asking if regulatory requirements and conditions are sufficient.
He says the Fukashima reactor met the licensing requirements and Japan’s nucear regular approved it’s license extension just one month before the accident.
He adds they treated licensing as a checklist and didn’t ask whether or not the standards were sufficient and should be changed.
Stensil says the CNSC regulatory guidance for long-term radioactive waste management is not sufficient.
