A giant lobster trap Christmas tree is being built today in the Saint Andrews Market Square.
The project is a fundraiser for the Saint Andrews Food Bank, and organizers say they have surpassed expectations and are now sold out of buoys to decorate the tree.
Allison Spear tells us the BIA and the Town of Saint Andrews thought it would be a great idea to set the tree up in Market Square.
The Town is still planning on having a traditional tree lighting as well. Spear says however, that this project was a great way for the community to get creative and come together for a great cause, “I just think that they all look so unique. It’s been pretty popular down in Maine and in Nova Scotia for some time now, but in our local area in Charlotte County I haven’t seen anything like this yet. In the future, if this takes off and people really like the idea and we need to get bigger, we have lots of traps that we can donate to help build it bigger. And we’ve even discussed maybe expanding into the other communities then helping raise money for their communities. If people from St. George or St. Stephen want to get involved, we’d be more than willing to make it a Charlotte County community tree.”
So far 107 buoys have been sold at $30 a piece, with proceeds going to the food bank.
The Lobster Trap Tree Lighting will be this Friday, November 24th in Market Square.
