Building Confidence In Women To Reduce Domestic Violence In Saint John and Rothesay

Two regional police forces are teaming up to bring awareness to domestic violence with New Brunswick having the highest rate of murder-suicide in Canada per capita.

Police in the KV and in Saint John are hosting self-defense classes and its popularity has suprised everyone.

Cst. Kelley McIntyre of the KV Regional Police Force tells us they are always looking for something different and unique to do every November and that officers from both departments are involved with Victory Women’s Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense on Hampton Road in Rothesay.

She says the officers involved are volunteering their time and proceeds from the Tanya Shand Milk and Cookie Run held back in September are being used to cover the costs for the women who are taking part.

Cst. McIntyre tells us the idea is to build some confidence in the women within our communities.

McIntyre says they are thrilled with the response from the community telling CHSJ News in the first 36 hours after they announced the class, she received 46 emails from women in Saint John and Rothesay who were interested in taking the class.

There are a few spots left in the next class this Saturday in Rothesay.
