At their annual general meeting, Port President and CEO Jim Quinn says the best example of that would be potash in the bulk sector and that’s after the closure of the Picadilly mine in 2016.
He says with a mine closure the first thoughts are for those who lost their jobs but he tells us a lot of potash continues to come here.
Quinn tells us that Saskatchewan potash is coming by rail across the country down into the Port and is then exported to global marketplaces.
Quinn says as we approach the end of May, Port Saint John has already seen about 750 thousand tonnes of potash which is higher than any other year with several months still left in the year.
