Initial numbers have city police in a pretty good financial position with the net operating expenses under budget by 2.6 per cent to the end of April.
Chief John Bates notes it’s early in the year but the number are positive so far.
Revenue exceeded the budget by more than $39 thousand. Salaries and wages were under budget by more than $260 thousand.
We asked the chief about the impact of policing special events like the fireworks display on May 18th. Bates says revenue comes in on the other side to offset that.
He adds you can expect to see more police officers out and about with the Canada 150 celebrations on July 1st.
Contract negotiations with the Saint John Police Association are ongoing.
