Thursday Morning Sports For June 22nd

Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers has won the Hart Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the NHL this past season. McDavid, who led the league in scoring, also won the Ted Lindsay Award which is given to the league’s most outstanding performer in a vote of his fellow players. Boston center Patrice Bergeron won the Selke Trophy for the fourth time as the NHL’s best defensive forward and Toronto center Auston Matthews won the Calder Trophy as the top rookie.

The Las Vegas Golden Knights chose Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in their expansion draft. Another former Penguin, forward James Neal was also selected. He had 41 points for Nashville during the regular season.

In the Majors, the New York Yankees broke their 7 game losing streak and moved back into first place in the American League East by half a game with an 8-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Matt Holliday hit his 15th homer of the season for the Yankees…..Salvador Perez hit a grand slam homer in the bottom of the 8th to give the Kansas City Royals a 6-4 win over the Boston Red Sox….The Toronto Blue Jays scored 6 runs in the first inning including a two run homer by Darwin Barney and hung on for a 7-5 win over Texas.

In the National League West, the Los Angeles Dodgers moved into first place by half a game after a 7-1 win over the New York Mets while second place Colorado lost to Arizona 16-5. In other play, it was Miami 2 Washington 1. Max Scherzer had a no hitter for the Nationals into the 8th inning…….Tampa Bay 8 Cincinnati 3…San Diego 3 Chicago Cubs 2……St. Louis 7 Philadelphia 6 (10 innings)…..Cleveland 5 Baltimore 1…..Atlanta 5 San Francisco 3 (11 innings)…..Milwaukee 4 Pittsburgh 3…..Minnesota 4 Chicago White Sox 2…..Houston 5 Oakland 1 and Seattle 7 Detroit 5. The Mariners rallied from a 4-0 deficit against Justin Verlander.

In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Saint John Alpines over the Fredericton Royals 9-4 with Brooks Saunders picking up the win. Mark Legere hit a grand slammer.
