Moncton Man Describes Third World Conditions In Haiti

A Moncton man who recently visited Haiti says it’s hard to imagine that there are third world conditions in North America so close to home.

Heath Johnson, an Oulton College education advisor, says the country suffered a major earthquake in 2010 and some of the rubble is still apparent as you drive around.

“The roads – we think we have potholes here – my goodness, every potholed road here is much smoother than the roads we drove on down there. Most of them were dirt roads,” he notes.

Johnson says he had water treatment where he stayed but many places don’t have fresh water or even indoor plumbing.

He was part of a small delegation which helped open a school near Port-au-Prince this month thanks to fundraising by Oulton College students and staff.

If you are able to make a donation, he recommends it and notes how quickly a donation had an impact on their cause.
