A new steel modular bridge is going to be built to replace the covered bridge in Hoyt, which was left unsalvageable after our wild weekend of stormy weather.
Transportation and Infrastructure minister Bill Fraser tells Acadia News the only other way in and out for those living on the other side of the bridge is through a logging road and they’ve hired a private contractor to provide temporary transportation.
“This is not an emergency service, for emergencies people should dial 911 and as I said to the residents when I visited them, people need to understand that until a replacement bridge is in place, emergency response times are going to be much, much slower,” says Fraser.
“We understand the attachment to the covered bridge and to covered bridges in general and it’s never our desire to have to remove a covered bridge. However, in this situation we have to consider the well being of the families on the other side of the bridge.”
Fraser says best case scenario the bridge will be replaced in six to eight weeks.
