Meet Cherry Brook Zoo’s Newest Addition, Chewie The Alpaca

The Cherry Brook Zoo has a brand new, very adorable addition.

Chewpaca, or Chewie for short, is a healthy baby alpaca born just two weeks ago at the zoo.

“The weather was quite nice the other day so we were able to let her out for an hour and she was running around with no problem, kicking her feet up in the air,” says zookeeper Shyanne Polley.

“She had no problems at birth,” Shane Button, another zookeeper, tells CHSJ News, “she got right up right away and started running around.”

Alpacas are from Peru and are used for wool.

There was an online voting poll to name the baby which garnered hundreds of votes but, in the end, the Star Wars-inspired name took the top spot with 54-percent of the vote. There were over 100 name suggestions that were narrowed down to five.

The winning name was suggested by Andrew Hazelton.

The zoo has to wait until it’s warm to let Chewie outside so we’re told this weekend between 11am and 2pm is probably your best bet to get a glimpse.
