Eighteen-year-old Charlie Cavanagh of Saint John is the World Youth Women’s boxing champion after winning gold in her division.
Speaking to our newsroom from Budapest, she tells us she just learned she was also named best female boxer of the tournament.
“Honestly it felt incredible because coming here I was not expected to win with my lack of experience compared to the other girls. I was just coming her hoping to do my best.” Cavanagh says.
A celebration for Cavanagh will be held on the Market Square boardwalk next Thursday.
She is heading home on Saturday and expects to arrive back in Saint John on Sunday morning.
