With concerns being raised by provincial Auditor General Kim MacPherson that New Brunswick’s debt has spiralled to more than $11.6 billion, or $15,400 per New Brunswicker, Kevin Lacey of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells CHSJ News we’ve seen the provincial government shirk its responsibility to deal with that.
Lacey says while the sheer size of the debt is a huge issue, it’s even more troubling that the government has only announced a program review and consultations – which, in his view, don’t address the heart of the situation.
He says privatizing Crown assets like NB Liquor would be one significant way to address the provincial debt.
