Local Boxer Raising Money For Olympic Journey

As Saint John boxer Charlie Cavanagh sets her sights on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, she is getting a lot of community support.

A GoFundMe page has been started to help pay for the costs of training, travelling and competing.

Mayor Don Darling donated $500 to the campaign and said he wants others to also help out.

“Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a Saint John Olympian in 2020?” Darling said at Monday’s council meeting.

“She’s a full-time sciences student at UNB Saint John, trains full-time and volunteers all over the city … she shouldn’t have to wash cars to get there.”

Darling said Cavanagh is a remarkable example of an incredible young woman in our city.

“Three years ago, Charlie stepped into the ring, having never boxed before,” he said. “She’s now a four-time national champion and world champion and has now set her sights on Tokyo 2020.”

The 18-year-old Cavanagh recently won gold in her division at the Youth Women’s World Championship in Budapest.
