An East Side man who pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and pointing a firearm at a police officer will serve 6 years in federal jail, plus 9 months. The court heard Abraao Magalhaes was fighting with his common-law partner one night in July on Crane Court in the Moreland Trailer Park.
During an argument, Magalhaes got a long gun and shot the doorknob off the bedroom where his wife was hiding. He pointed a gun at one of the attending police officers, shot his wife, then turned the gun on himself. Magalhaes suffered serious wound to his face and mouth, while the victim was shot in the hip and has required extensive surgeries.
The court heard victim impact statements in which she described how the trauma of the incident has given her nightmares and left her in daily pain.
Magalhaes apologized to his family members saying he has no recollection of that night. In addition to the jail time, he’s also been banned for life from owning firearms and must submit a DNA sample.
