A New Sidewalk Sweeper For Uptown Saint John

There will be no more piles of cigarette butts in the Uptown greeting cruise ship passengers, tourists and everyday shoppers thanks to Uptown Saint John.

The Business Improvement Area has purchased a $60,000 sidewalk sweeper that was unveiled Tuesday.

Executive Director Nancy Tissington says it will be put to good use between May and October of each year.

“I have one person, he is a retired person and I have a backup person to help as well, so we want to make she’s is out, she’s seen and we’re going to start it early in the morning so we are not around foot traffic,” says Tissington.

Its main job is cleaning up cigarette butts and gravel and some light trash and Tissington says the members have had this on a wish list.

“We do surveys and we hear back from our members on a number of issues and one of the issues was the cleanliness that they would like to see in the uptown and we have been hearing that over several surveys,” stated Tissington.
