New Idea For Funding Public Transit In City

Saint Johnners love their cars so why not use parking to offset the cost of public transit? The Transit Union maintains the system is just limping along with buses that are too old which break down too often.

Common Councillor David Merrithew, who chairs the city’s Finance Comittee, pitching the idea of a parking surcharge that would then go toward updating out decades-old bus fleet. He tells CHSJ News it would hardly be felt on a monthly basis and would add up over time.[

Common Councillor Bill Farren says he doesn’t want to see a surcharge for on street parking because it could hurt uptown businesses.

The Parking and Transit Commissions have been asked to look into how such a surcharge could be phased in.
