The report from the Transportation Safety Board into the deadly train derailment which devastated the core of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec in 2013 is critical of the train’s owner and Transport Canada over ensuring safety.
Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway, which is now bankrupt, was described as having a weak safety culture and Transport Canada did not audit the railway company enough to ensure safety procedures were being adhered to.
47 people in the town were killed. The oil on board the runaway tanker cars that exploded was destined for the Irving Oil refinery.
