Saint John got something like 30 centimeters of snow made worse by the strong winds that were blowing as high as 108 kilometers an hour which caused blizzard like conditions prompting the city to pull its plows off the roads a couple of times during the day. They were back on at 9 last night and the main roads have been plowed.
Andy Firth of Environment Canada says we won’t be getting any more snow but it will remain bitterly cold with strong northwesterly winds gusting to 60 kilometers an hour.
Schools in the Anglophone South School District have been closed for the day. Also closed are the Community College and U-N-B Saint John.
Saint John Transit buses are off their runs until noon hour and the McAllister Place Mall will not be opening until 1 this afternoon.
The changeover in alternate side parking in the South-Central Peninsula has been cancelled for the time being. There are vehicles that have been abandoned in various parts of the city after getting stuck and they’re being towed. To make plowing easier, Councillor At Large Shirley McAlary is proposing that all on street parking in the city be banned during the winter during the overnight hours. That proposal gets an airing tonight at Common Council.
The Transportation Department telling us the Westfield ferry will not be running because of the weather. The Evandale ferry is also off its run.
The Princess of Acadia ferry between Saint John and Digby will not be sailing today.
Saint John Airport reports the three early morning departures to Halifax, Toronto and Montreal have been cancelled. The morning arrivals from Halifax and Toronto are on time.
