Common Council Rejects Spending on Regional Policing Study

Comon Council shooting down the idea of supporting an an approximately 100 thousand dollar study into regional policing by a 7-3 vote after hearing a presentation from former city police chief Al Bodechon.

Councillor John MacKenzie says that in his heart he doesn’t believe the political will is there, adding when he sees a request come from other areas in the region to go forward with regional police service then that would be the right time to do it.

Bodechon telling Council during his presentation, a recent study undertaken in Canada showed that from 2002 to 2012 police spending has gone up by 42 percent.

Councillor Greg Norton says more and more jurisdictions are regionalising services in order to restrain the cost of doing business.

Mayor Mel Norton tells us it’s expected the issue will come back to the The Fundy Regional Service Commission for further discussion and a vote on the future direction in April.
