Too many police officers, and too little crime.
That’s the issue being dealt with my municipalities all over the country which are hemorrhaging money on inflated police services, and according to a new study by the Fraser Institute, Saint John ranks with Winnipeg, Windsor, St Catherines Niagara, and Abbotsford-Mission as having one of the most overstaffed police forces in the country.
Livio di Matteo is a senior fellow with the Fraser Institute and he tells CHSJ News it’s time to have the conversation about crime rates and staffing levels.
The Saint John Police Force is on track to run half a million dollars over budget this year after a negotiated wage increase of 12% over the next 3 years–this, after a wage freeze of several years.
In the same study, Moncton was rated one of the most understaffed police forces.
