Police Expect Higher Costs Due To Cannabis Legalization

The legalization of recreational cannabis is creating some challenges for the Saint John Police Force.

While discussing the budget at a recent finance committee meeting, Acting Chief Bruce Connell said the new law could result in a two per cent spike in budget costs for the force.

He calls it a whole new world, adding they may need to add staff to traffic services to deal with the impact.

After cannabis legalization in Colorado back in 2012, Connell said there was a spike in fatal collisions.

The Saint John Police Force has a proposed $25.9-million budget for 2019 — an increase of less than one per cent over 2017.

The force is exploring a return to international peacekeeping for some members and community partnerships as a new revenue stream.
