If the Conservatives lose power in the upcoming federal election, do we still get the upgrades coming to border crossings?
Construction work at the border crossing isn’t slated to begin in St. Stephen until 2017. That’s well after the next federal election, which was called this weekend. We go to the polls on October 19th.
Incumbent MP for South-West New Brunswick, John Williamson, says these are important, long-term projects. He says $440 million dollars is being invested into 77 ports of entry, $32.5 million is slated for the four border crossings in Charlotte County alone, at Ferry Point, Milltown, Campobello, and St. Croix. “These are infrastructure dollars that you don’t just turn on and off, any given year.”
Williamson says regardless of what happens in October, he believes the investment will still go through, “There’s, I think, a broad agreement amoungst all the political parties that we need to maintain federal infrastructure.”
Williamson officially putting in his bid in the election this weekend.
