Sentencing For Joseph Paul Irving Set Over Until Friday

Sentencing in the case of 54-year-old Joseph Paul Irving, who has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, has been set over until Friday morning at 9:30.

A victim impact statement written by the mother of Cynthia Irving being read aloud to the courtroom. In it, she writes that she loved her daughter with all of her heart and would do anything to have her back.

Irving, upon getting the chance to speak, saying he is sorry to several people including his kids. He adds that he wishes this wouldn’t have happened, but it did happen.

The law indicates that Irving is to receive a life sentence however the Crown is asking that he have to serve 15 years in prison until he can be eligible for parole, saying that the fact that he abused his wife is considered to be an aggravating factor.

The defense, meantime, arguing for 11 or 12 years saying Irving has expressed remorse and regret and has been extremely cooperative.
