Fundy Regional Service Commission Voting On Waste Diversion Today

The Fundy Regional Services Commission getting together today to vote on what waste diversion program should be implemented in the region.

Saint John council coming out in support of Option 3 which includes both curbside recycling and composting, and carries the biggest price tag, on the condition the region work together to find savings.

Mayor Mel Norton says the estimated cost increase for the city with the third option is about $500,000 and Norton says that, the way it stands now, is too much money for the City. He says they can support the support the option provided there is some way to lower the costs.

The town of Rothesay also voting to support the third option while the neighbouring community of Quispasmsis chose Option 1, which is the status quo featuring recycling depots and compost. Quispamsis council did not budget on their decision despite calls for them to reconsider the third option.
