Telephone Scam Targeting Syrian Newcomers In Saint John

CEO Rick Hancox of the Financial and Consumer Services Commission says a telephone scam is targeting Syrian newcomers in Saint John.

A family of Syrian refugees were contacted by someone looking for money and banking information in exchange for english lessons.

The family lost roughly $400 dollars after falling for the scam.

The family’s interpreter called the police and the bank, but the money had already been taken from their account.
