Protestors Gather In Front Of Weston’s Office To Oppose Bill C-51

Between 50 and 75 protesters gathering in front of Saint John MP Rodney Weston’s office to oppose the federal government’s anti-terrorism bill.

Wayne Dryer, who ran for the Green Party in Saint John Harbour during the provincial election, says the wording of Bill C-51 is so vague that, depending on who down the road chooses to interpret the law, anyone who expresses a negative opinion about any direction the government is moving could become subject to surveillance.

He says there is a legitimate terrorist threat but the legislation is like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Clarence Dolan, CEO of the Saint John Green Party Association organizing the event, and he tells us did so in order to get people involved.

People were signing a petition against the bill that we’re told will be sent to leader of the Green Party of Canada Elizabeth May. Near the end of the rally, people began chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, Stephen Harper has to go” which then turned into “Rodney Weston has to go.”

Similar protests are being held across the country today.
