Council Learns Of Super Deficit At Saint John Transit

More budget woes for a city agency. This time it’s Saint John Transit.

Saint John Transit is running a deficit between 600 and 800 thousand dollars and may require emergency funding from Common council.

Mayor Mel Norton tells us they just learned of this on Monday adding this short notice leads them to question the commission’s management.

He says this commission and every city board and agency needs to understand it’s not the Bank of Saint John but the City of Saint John.

Norton adds they provide a budget and the agencies, board and commission needs to know they have to manage that budget and can’t come back with less than 60 days left in the year and ask for the better part of a million dollars.

Council has asked for a explantion from Saint John transit.
