24 firefighters responding to the Prince Edward street high rise after a fire on the fourth floor.
One senior woman suffered burns and was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Saint John Fire Chief Kevin Clifford says a couch caught fire in one apartment filling the floor with black smoke.
He says crews were quickly able to put out the fire but it did result in a lot of black smoke and heat damage.
About 15 Tenants waited in the lobby and some who wanted to were allowed to leave.
Firefighters brought in large fans to help disperse the smoke.
Crews were on scene for more than an hour.
