Retired Supreme Court Justice Ian Binnie has released his report on Senate expense claims and lowered how much money has to be paid back.
14 Senators appealed what auditor general Michael Ferguson claimed they owed in their expense claims.
Binnie says he’s not suggesting there was any bad motive on the part of the Senators.
He says all senators will have to ask themselves a simple question, “is this an expendature that will stand up to serious scrutany because odds are it will get serious scrutany”.
The auditor general had said the 14 senators must repay over 322 thousand dollars, but that has been revised downward by Binnie to almost 178 thousand dollars.
New Brunswick Senator Sandra Lovelace Nicholas, a Liberal, had more than $75 thousand in expenses flagged by the auditor general.
Senator Joe Day of Hampton owed more than 19 thousand dollars but that was lowered on review to over 3 thousand dollars
Binnie determined she will have to repay over $38 thousand.
