The provincial government will pony up three million dollars to IBM for the 250 jobs it will create in New Brunswick over three years. That works out to payroll rebates of 12 thousand dollars a job.
Premier Brian Gallant maintains the taxpayer is protected because the money isn’t paid until the jobs are created.
As for criticism of the financial incentives, Stephen Lund of Opportunities NB says they have to be offered to be in the game at the table. Lund says the province will make money.
The IBM jobs will pay in the range of 50 thousand dollars a year.
The provincial NDP has argued against such incentives, saying even if the jobs are created, they’re not necessarily for the long term.
