The New Brunswick Anti-Shale Gas Alliance says it’s time for the Gallant government to forget about extracting fossil fuels from the ground and instead focus on green energy.
Spokesperson Jim Emberger says the cost of renewable energy is now as competitive as slumping oil and gas prices.
“I mean last year in the United States, the vast majority of new electricty that was added to their grid came from renewables. So why aren’t we pursuing that direction?”, he asks.
Emberger adds the NDP and the Green party both support an expansion of green energy and he hopes the Liberal government will too.
Texas-based SWN Resources recently closed its New Brunswick office in Moncton claiming the province’s moratorium on shale gas development created uncertainty in the industry.
