Provincial Minimum Wage Increasing This Week

A small increase in the minimum wage for New Brunswickers is coming this week.

On Friday, the minimum wage rises to $10.65 an hour, a raise of 35 cents.

That will bring us in line with Nova Scotia and PEI, who last year agreed to harmonize regulatory changes in order to reduce red tape.

Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry says this increase will help New Brunswickers meet their needs and improve their quality of life.

She adds this helps some of our most vulnerable workers cope with an increasing cost of living, while providing predictabiliyt for businesses to plan for payroll changes.

Landry says they want businesses to remain competitive, but not at the cost of stagnant worker wages.

The provincial government plans to increase the wage to $11.00 an hour by 2017 – and tie it to inflation after that.
