Fire At Landfill

A compost pile caught fire this morning at the Crane Mountain landfill. It was started by smouldering ashes that were in the compost.

A staff member noticed the fire in the compost hall.

Fire crews responded and an excavator was brought in to help extinguish it.

The landfill’s Brenda MacCallum warns ashes have to be handled carefully. They should be placed in a metal container outdoors, soaked with water and left for days before being disposed of.
