Concerns About Big Layoffs Coming In The Alberta Oil Patch

Plunging oil prices are creating anxiety for Maritime families relying on a paycheck from out west.

Companies might need to stop production and lay off workers in order to increase the demand for crude.

Hundreds of families in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI are concerned about the future of the job situation in the oil patch.

Nova Scotia Tory leader Jamie Baillie says their concerns are real. “If this is the new normal with low prices and jobs are going to be lost, we have a duty here as governments in Atlantic Canada to do all we can do develop our own resources and get going with job creation here.”

He fears skilled workers will be laid off and come back to the Maritimes with no chance of finding work.

Baillie says government opposition to the development of shale gas is hurting the region.
